Filippino Lippi was one of the most revered and renowned painters of his time, overcoming the circumstance of his scandalous birth as the son of the Carmelite friar Filippo Lippi and the nun Lucrezia Buti. A child prodigy, Filippino was tutored by his father, entering the workshop of his father’s student Sandro Botticelli when Filippo diedand remaining there for eight years. Filippino’s first major assignment was to complete the unfinished frescos of Masolino and Masaccio in the Brancacci Chapel, works which had inspired his father 60 years before. Subsequently he embarked on a highly successful career fulfilling important commissions from Lorenzo de’ Medici and other leading families of the Florentine Republic.
