Maxfield Parrish
1870-1966
American
Student of Robert Vonnoh, Thomas Anshutz, Henry Thouron, Howard Pyle
Maxfield Parrish first considered a career as an architect, but after three years at Haverford, he transferred to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts to study painting under Robert Vonnoh, Thomas Anshutz, and Henry Thouron. He studied briefly with Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute before launching his long and prolific career. Parrish’s unique fairytale visions, painted with crystal clarity and a dream-like palette of colors, graced magazine covers, calendars, book interiors, and murals for the walls of public buildings and private residences. One of America’s best known and most easily recognized artists in his lifetime, Parrish continued to paint into his 90s, fashioning landscapes based on his surroundings in northern New England.
