Raffaellino del Garbo
1466-1524
Italian
Student of Filippino Lippi
Teacher of Agnolo Bronzino
Raffaellino del Garbo began his training as the student and assistant of one of the most revered painters of his time, Filippino Lippi. Much of Garbo’s stylistic influence comes from Lippi, with borrowed elements including poses of hands, feet, faces, gestures, and background details, an accepted practice of using formulaic norms prevalent in Florentine workshops. After establishing his career as a painter, Garbo operated his own workshop, training students who then became assistants in the production of altarpieces, preparing panels and pigments for commissions. The legacy of his teaching was carried on through his students, in particular Agnolo Bronzino and Andrea del Sarto.
