On this day, January 18, 1861, cartoonist and illustrator Edward Windsor Kemble was born in Sacramento, California. A largely self-taught artist, by the age of 20 Kemble was already contributing to magazines such as Harper’s Weekly and Frank Leslies Illustrated Newspaper. In 1884 Mark Twain employed Kemble as the illustrator for the first publication of his Huckleberry Finn.
