On this day, August 2, 1900, author and illustrator Holling Clancy Holling was born in Jackson County, Michigan. After studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he worked at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Holling began creating children’s books in the 1920s. His book Paddle-to-the-Sea published in 1941, won a Caldecott Honor in 1942.
