On this day, July 10, 1911, illustrator and author Jack Coggins was born in London, England, His family emigrated to the U. S. in 1923. Coggins studied art at the Grand Central School of Art in New York and at the Art Students League. During WWII, Coggins produced war illustrations for Life magazine and illustrations for PM and The Saturday Evening Post. During the war hia duty was working for YANK magazine. He also began writing some of the books he illustrated, especially those of military or historical themes.
