On this day, July 4, 1883, engineer, cartoonist, sculptor, and inventor Rube Goldberg was born in San Francisco, California. Goldberg is best known for his series of popular cartoon depicting complex and humorous gadgets. Trained as an engineer, in his twenties, Goldberg moved to New York City and worked for various newspapers. His cartoons were syndicated by the McNaught Syndicate from 1922 until 1934.
