On this day, July 5, 1936, illustrator John Schoenherr was born in New York City. Schoenherr studied at the Art Students League of New York and in the 60s began creating science fiction illustrations including our vision of sandworms for Herbert’s Dune. Also a wildlife artist and a children’s book illustrator, Schoenherr won the 1988 Caldecott Medal for his illustrations for Owl Moon by Jane Yolen.
