On this day, July 5, 1878, Howard Vachel Brown was born in Lexington, Kentucky. After Brown studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he moved to New York where he worked as a freelance illustrator and took classes at the Art Students League. During WWI he worked for the United States Shipping Board creating camouflage. Brown sold work to various magazines and in the 20s he began to sell to various pulp publications.
