On this day, June 10,  1874, illustrator Violet Oakley was born in Bergen   Heights, New Jersey. Oakley studied at the Art Students League of New York, at the PennsylvaniaAcademy of the Fine Arts, and with Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute. Oakley quickly found success as a popular illustrator for the major magazines of the day and eventually as a mural painter.
