On this day, June 15, 1914, cartoonist and illustrator Saul Steinberg was born in Romania. After studying philosophy and architecture, Steinberg left Europe and came to the U. S. by way of the Dominican Republic. The New Yorker magazine sponsored his entry into the U. S. and over the course of the rest of his life Steinberg Steinberg created almost 90 New Yorker cover illustrations and more than 1,200 drawings.
