On this day, June 16, 1987, children’s book author and illustrator Marguerite de Angeli died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The daughter of a photographer/illustrator, Marguerite studied under Maurice Bower after her marriage and the birth of her children. By the 1920s she was working as an illustrator. The publication of her first book was in 1935 and in 1950 she was awarded a Newbery Medal for The Door in the Wall.
