On this day, March 11, 1893, author, artist, translator, and illustrator Wanda Hazel Gág was born in New Ulm, Minnesota. She created her first illustrated children’s story when she was still in her teens. Gág studied art at the Saint Paul School of Art, at the Minneapolis School of Art, and at the Art Students League in New York. She wrote and illustrated her 1928 book, Millions of Cats, that was awarded a Newberry Honor in 1929.
