On this day, March 15, 1914, Gil (Gillette) Elvgren was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. After studying at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Elvgren moved to Chicago to study and eventually to work as an advertising artist with Stevens and Gross. In the late 1930s Elvgren began to create calendar pin-ups in addition to his illustration and advertising work.
