On this day, May 10, 1900, comic strip artist Vincent T. Hamlin was born in Perry, Iowa. He created the character that became Alley Oop at the age of 11. After service in WWI, Hamlin went to college as a journalist, eventually while working for various newspapers he began to produce comic strips. Alley Oop was syndicated and launched as a daily strip in 1934. Hamlin continued to produce it until his retirement in 1971.
